Why Do They Do This?!
By Gus
This article isn’t for you, but you know this kind of person.
They have a big goal that gets them very excited: running a marathon… losing 40 pounds… 1 hour of meditation every single day for a year.
That person didn’t celebrate running their first 5k or losing the first 10 pounds.
Even more unfortunate, once they realized how hard it was to get that first step, they were discouraged and didn’t stick it out for the bigger goal. They didn’t meditate a single minute after the streak broke on day 8.
What do you think that person should do instead?
Here’s my take, feel free to pass it on to that person in your life.
Instead of a “run a marathon” pick “be a runner.” Every little workout counts. The first workout of the classic “Couch-to-5k” (C25k) program is 20 minutes long, almost all walking, and it totally counts. C25k is an 8 week program and if you take 16 weeks it totally counts. That day your kid wanted to join you and you weren’t really so much “running” as “having fun in the park”… yeah that counts to. Every week or so look back at what you’ve done and don’t ask yourself who close you are to a marathon, or even a 5k, ask yourself “am I being a runner?” You can choose to be a runner any day you want.
Instead of “lose 40 pounds” pick “experiment with my food.” Instead of “meditate 1 hour everyday” pick “learn to meditate.” Find small wins, enjoy the process, watch how its going, and trust that the big goals will happen over the long-term. You’re more likely to actually accomplish a dream if you accomplish all the steps along the way and acknowledge how great they are.
But wait, this isn’t for you. It’s for them. You have your own take on this, right?
