Why Squat?

Being a member at Gus’s Barbell Club implicitly means developing a relationship with The Squat. No program will be without in some form or fashion.
Yes, most of the time we’re following the Starting Strength method which has a lot of opinions on The Squat, but that’s not why we squat.
Yes, it’s a great full-body movement that provides its own warm-up for the rest of the session, but that’s not why we squat.
Yes, strength in The Squat assists strength in nearly every athletic endeavor, but that’s not why we squat.
We squat because even though your goal is to look good in that swimsuit on vacation, keeping your hips functioning is still more important despite not being top of mind. We squat because if you ever need a knee or hip replacement, you’ll be able to recover better and get back to skiing. We squat because at 85 years old the difference between getting up off the toilet by yourself vs. needing assistance could make all the difference as to whether you want to bother making it to 86.
A better squat will never hold you back. So we squat.
